Shaw & Co Partner Constantine Biller will be speaking at The Business Desk’s North West Family Business Conference which takes place in Manchester on Tuesday 1 October.

Shaw & Co is also sponsoring the event which will bring together a range of family businesses and other professionals from across the region to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by this important sector.

The conference will specifically comprise a keynote address from Nick Bianchi of leading luxury furniture business Arigi Bianchi, as well as two roundtables:

• Planning for the Future

Whether planning for the succession of the next generation, or taking a strategic decision to do something significant (capital raise, or go for growth), the key is to take time to do so way in advance. This strategic discussion will weigh up the various options for the boards of family owned businesses, whether that is to keep it in the family and it’s then inherited; generational buyout where the next generation buy out the older generation; involvement of private equity; or a full sale.

• Talent Development in a Family Business

By their nature family businesses are unique and centred on the family unit. But to be successful many blend external talent with homegrown family expertise. Sometimes family members spend time out of the business acquiring skills and experiences for the long term, greater good. Is there a secret formula to getting this right? and how have businesses successfully managed to create a culture based on excellence, merit and family values

The event will then conclude with a panel session hosted by Michael Taylor, North West Editor, TheBusinessDesk.com and featuring:

• Nick Bianchi, Director, Arighi Bianchi

• Constantine Biller, Partner, Shaw & Co

• Charmaine O’Connor, Chief Executive, P P O'Connor

• Jim Truscott, Partner and Head of Corporate, Beyond Corporate Law.
